A 29-year-old woman from Fort Rixon, Matabeleland South, has admitted to assaulting her friend by pouring acid on her, after accusing her of having an affair with her husband, a court heard on Tuesday.
Sithulisile Nyoni appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Eva Matura and pleaded guilty to a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
The attack occurred on May 28, 2025, at Pioneer Village 1 Business Centre, where the victim, 26-year-old Berlinda Mkandla, was working as a shop assistant. The two women were reportedly friends before the violent incident.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority's representative Mufaro Ndirayire, Nyoni approached Mkandla at around 8PM and accused her of being romantically involved with her husband. The confrontation quickly escalated, with Nyoni dousing Mkandla with acid, targeting her face and right thigh.
Mkandla sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital. Police were alerted and Nyoni was arrested soon after the incident.
In court, Nyoni acknowledged her guilt and expressed remorse, offering to pay the US$1,000 required for Mkandla's medical treatment as part of her mitigation.
Magistrate Matura remanded Nyoni in custody to June 25 for sentencing.
The case has sent shockwaves through the Fort Rixon community, with local residents expressing concern over rising gender-based violence and the emotional toll of domestic disputes.
