Drunk driver hits cycling schoolboys from behind, flees scene on foot

A Guruve driver allegedly hit two children on bicycles from behind before fleeing the scene on foot leaving his car.

Sources close to investigations allege the vehicle, a Toyota Ipsum - registration number AED3541, hit two cyclists aged 14 and 15 from the back and the driver fled from the scene.

"We can confirm receiving a report of an Ipsum registered ADE 3541 that allegedly hit two minors from the back.

"The driver disembarked after the accident and fled from the scene," said the source.

An eye witnesses said the driver identified as Godfrey was said to be drunk and hit the school boys who were cycling on their right side.

"The car belongs to Godfrey and he is the one who was said to be driving under the influence of alcohol.

"When he hit them he panicked and disembarked before taking to his heels like a flash," said Victor Mangrove.

Meanwhile, Bulawayo24.com contacted Guruve district schools inspector Mr Pennius Dambuza who confirmed the case and said the school boys have since been transferred to Parirenyatwa group of hospitals.

"The boys who were hit are from Chimufombo primary, they were rushed to Guruve hospital yesterday, but they are seriously injured hence they were referred to Parirenyatwa today.
