IN African culture, a memorial service is a final moment where people celebrate the life of the departed .
However, in a rape incident which has left Marange villagers calling for justice, a 66-year-old man allegedly raped his 16-year-old niece during his late wife's post burial function.
The incident happened last week in Rambai village under Chief Marange.
The accused, David Daara has since been arrested and is assisting police with investigations.
Police said Faith Chinogwenyu (50), an aunt to the juvenile (name withheld) visited Daara on August 21 in Marange in the company of the complainant to attend a post-burial function for Daara's late wife.
Upon arrival, Chinogwenyu unraveled the bombshell to the juvenile that the main purpose of their visit was to 'handover the juvenile to Daara as his new wife' since the latter's wife had passed on.
"On August 23, Chinogwenyu persuaded the juvenile to share the same bedroom with Daara.
Daara raped the juvenile twice during that night. He raped her again the following day.
The complainant's uncle who resides in Kadoma received an anonymous call and learnt about the incident. He made a police report and Daara was arrested," said the Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Enock Chishiri.
"This is unacceptable. Forcing marriages is a crime and we do not tolerate that. Guardians and parents are supposed to be exemplary and be responsible but we will not tolerate guardians who force juveniles to get into early marriages," he said.
Meanwhile, an 18-year-old teenager in Odzi was allegedly raped by her uncle after she had a conflict with the accused's mother.
Insp Chishiri said Hassan Mungora (age not given) raped the teenager once on August 23 at around 4pm after he pretended to mediate and end the scuffle between her and his mother.
He allegedly dragged the teenager into his room on the pretext of saving her before raping her once.
A police report was made to the police and investigations are underway.
