On Friday morning, a destructive fire erupted at the University of Zimbabwe's main campus, consuming a building that housed the physics department. Social media photos depicted the structure engulfed in flames.
Fadzayi Mahere, the Mount Pleasant legislator and chair of the parliamentary portfolio committee on education, verified the incident in a post on her platform. She conveyed the distressing news, stating, "I received a disheartening report earlier today regarding a fire that broke out at the University of Zimbabwe's Physics Department. Students present at the scene suspect that the fire may have been caused by exposed electrical wires, though the precise cause remains unclear. The students were understandably anxious as the Fire Department worked to control the furious blaze."
Mahere also expressed the unfortunate timing of this tragedy, given the existing challenges faced by the students, including a fee crisis, outdated infrastructure, and a lack of adequate equipment and resources at the nation's largest tertiary institution.
However, as of now, the full extent of the damage and the root cause of the fire remain undetermined.
