Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Tawanda Chirewa is now eligible to play for Zimbabwe in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Group C qualifiers after obtaining his passport.
The passport, processed in Harare, arrived in Johannesburg in time for Zimbabwe's match against Lesotho at Orlando Stadium. Zimbabwe will then face South Africa in Bloemfontein.
Chirewa, who has made eight appearances for Wolves, is excited to join the Warriors and is expected to play as a number 10.
ZIFA secured Chirewa's passport with assistance from the Registrar General's office and local figures. ZIFA CEO Yvonne Manwa confirmed Chirewa's eligibility for the qualifiers. Chirewa expressed his excitement and readiness to contribute to the team.
Midfielder Andy Rinomhota emphasized the team's good chemistry and determination to improve their standing in Group C, where Zimbabwe currently has two points. He stressed the importance of starting strong against Lesotho to enhance their chances of qualifying for the World Cup.
Additionally, Tawanda Maswanhise of Leicester City is in high spirits after his team's promotion to the EPL and is eager to contribute to Zimbabwe's success, despite his limited knowledge of Shona or Ndebele.
