Tragedy struck on the Harare–Nyamapanda Road when seven members of the same family died in a crash that left nine others injured.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed that the accident occurred at the 49-kilometre peg and involved a kombi carrying 16 family members, a tombstone, and bricks.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the driver lost control while attempting to overtake another vehicle, causing the overloaded kombi to overturn. Five people died instantly, and two others succumbed to injuries at the hospital.
"The kombi was carrying 16 family members and goods including a tombstone and bricks. Seven people died, and nine others were injured after the driver lost control while overtaking," Comm Nyathi said.
Survivors were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Police have urged motorists to exercise caution, emphasizing that speeding and unsafe overtaking continue to claim lives on Zimbabwe's highways.
The names of the deceased are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
