A Tsholotsho injiva who once made headlines for throwing a R500 000 housewarming bash has been shot dead in South Africa.

Ndumiso Sibanda, originally from Mathetshaneni in Gwelu village, was gunned down in the early hours of yesterday morning in Hilbrow by unknown assailants.

Ward 17 Councillor and family member, Mr Church Ncube, confirmed the tragedy.
"It is true he passed away in South Africa. He is my son-in-law. From what we know, he was shot around 2am after attending a birthday party. That's all the information we have for now," said Mr Ncube.

Sibanda, remembered for his generosity, was known to provide groceries to struggling families back home. But in South Africa, fear has gripped his friends and associates, many of whom are too afraid to speak out.

"His killers are still out there and watching. Nobody wants to talk until it's safe," said a source in Hilbrow.

Sibanda rose to prominence in 2021 when he hosted a two-day housewarming celebration that turned into a music festival featuring top Rhumba and local artists, including Mxolisi "Mr Bones" Ndlovu, Clement Magwaza, Tsheba Boys, Dubia Masters, Zinjaziyamluma, Insimbi Zezhwane, Madlela Sikhobokhobo, Mzoe 7 and Khaya Arts, among others.

Part of a flamboyant group known as Umzila Wegolide, Sibanda and his crew were celebrated for their love of Rhumba music and for supporting artists by splashing cash at album launches and shows.

His close friend, businessman Mamba from Insuza, described the loss as devastating.
"We had something big lined up for the DJ Mapresa event on 4 October, and another for December. Everything has been shattered by his passing," he said.

South African police are yet to release details about possible suspects or the motive behind the killing.
