House of Assembly Member Noah Takawoda Joni Mangondo has voiced concern over the deteriorating state of rural road networks in communal lands, warning that many become impassable during the rainy season. Speaking in Parliament, Mangondo urged the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development to implement immediate measures to prevent road closures.
Minister Felix Mhona acknowledged the challenge, noting that many rural roads are vulnerable to damage during grading and heavy rains. He revealed that the Ministry has developed soil-stabilizing chemicals to improve road durability, though these innovations are still being rolled out.
Mhona emphasized the role of Rural District Councils and the Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA) in maintaining these roads, and called for increased budgetary support to scale up interventions. “We cannot do the majority of these roads each season,” he said, “but with more funding, we can ensure better service delivery by 2026.”
The exchange highlights ongoing infrastructure gaps in Zimbabwe’s communal areas and the need for sustainable, climate-resilient road solutions.
