Zimbabwe govt acquires Monomotapa hotel

The Government has acquired Harare's iconic Monomotapa Hotel from local hospitality group African Sun Limited for use by Members of Parliament (MPs) during parliamentary sittings, Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube has announced.

Speaking at the ongoing 2026 Pre-Budget Seminar in Bulawayo, Professor Ncube said the move was aimed at reducing government expenditure on hotel bookings and improving accommodation arrangements for legislators when Parliament is in session.

"I'm going to announce today that we have bought you [MPs] a hotel - the Monomotapa Hotel. This is for use by MPs," said Ncube to applause from delegates.

He said the decision was part of broader fiscal rationalisation measures intended to ensure prudent use of public resources. "This will help us save on accommodation costs whenever Parliament is sitting," he said, adding that the hotel would remain open to the public when the legislature is not in session.

Monomotapa Hotel, a flagship property located in Harare's central business district, was put on the market by African Sun in July this year as part of the group's efforts to "unlock shareholder value." At the time, the hotel was valued at US$18 million.

While Ncube confirmed the acquisition, he did not disclose the purchase price or financing details of the transaction.

The development marks a significant shift in the government's approach to managing parliamentary logistics, with officials describing it as a cost-saving measure that could also enhance the independence and convenience of lawmakers.

The Monomotapa Hotel has long been one of Zimbabwe's premier hospitality landmarks, hosting international guests and government delegations since its establishment. Its transfer to government ownership signals both a symbolic and practical realignment of state assets in line with fiscal efficiency goals.
