Police dismiss claims of prison escape, clarify suspect fled Plumtree Prison

HARARE - The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has dismissed reports claiming that Cabangani Mathe (37) escaped from police custody on November 14, clarifying instead that the suspect fled from Plumtree Prison, where he was serving a 20-year sentence for rape.
In a statement posted on their official X account, police said:
"The ZRP dismisses allegations that Cabangani Mathe escaped from police custody on November 14. For the record, the suspect escaped from Plumtree Prison where he was serving a 20-year sentence for rape."
Authorities further revealed that Mathe also had pending cases before the courts, including murder and engaging in sexual intercourse with a young person.
The police urged media houses and social media users to exercise caution and verify information with relevant authorities before publishing or sharing reports that may mislead the public and fuel speculation.
