Another journalist arrested as police crush church demo

Police in Harare have arrested a NewsDay reporter, Obey Manayiti as he was covering a demonstration by church leaders in Harare.

"Our reporter, Obey Manayiti who was covering a churches-led demonstration in Harare has been arrested" the publication tweeted.

Media Institute for Southern Africa (MISA) Zimbabwe chapter director Nhlanhla Ngwenya said "Clearly, the on going feigning of ignorance by the police on the role of journos should STOP".

On Wednesday, freelance journalist Lucy Yasin was assaulted by riot police in Harare while covering a march by MDC-T youths who were launching a campaign dubbed #MyZimbabwe.

Yasin confirmed she had been struck once with a baton stick by a member of the riot police despite having identified herself as a journalist.

She said the assault occurred in the heat of skirmishes in the central business district after the police reportedly prevented the marchers from presenting a petition to the Minister of Home Affairs Ignatius Chombo protesting against police brutality.

Members of the riot police on 3 August 2016 also assaulted journalists Lawrence Chimunhu, Christopher Mahove,Tendai Musiya, Haru Mutasa, Tsvangirai Mukwazhi , Bridget Mananavire and Imelda Mhetu as they covered demonstrations against the Zimbabwe government's plans to introduce bond notes in the wake of the deteriorating socio-economic environment.

Meanwile,the churches-led protest has been thwarted by police. The police pounced as soon as the march started.

Police are dispersing vendors and kombis from the Central Business District.
