The processing and dispatching of exemption permits for Zimbabweans living and working in South Africa should be completed in the next two to three weeks, the South African Ministry of Home Affairs has announced.

Zimbabwe's Consul General in South Africa, Mr Henry Batiraishe Mukonoweshuro explained that the Zimbabwe exemption permit is valid from January 2018 to December 2021.

"It allows Zimbabweans to study, work and carry out their private businesses in South Africa and it is only eligible to holders of the 2014 special dispensation permits which had 250 000 applicants," he said.

To date, there are around 180 000 Zimbabwean holders of the permit who applied for the Zimbabwe exemption permit," added Mr Mukonoweshuro.

South Africa is a major job market for Zimbabwean migrants and those from other SADC countries dating back to time immemorial when thousands flocked down south to work in the gold and diamond mines of Egoli.

South Africa is also Zimbabwe's biggest trading partner.

The huge exodus of Zimbabweans in search of greener pastures to South Africa necessitated the introduction of the special exemption permits for Zimbabweans to legally work and live in the southern neighbouring country.
