A 21-year-old woman from Helenvale in Umguza, Matabeleland North province, has been arrested for allegedly killing her boyfriend following a heated domestic dispute.
Bulawayo police acting spokesperson Assistant Inspector Thandekile Ndlovu confirmed the incident, identifying the deceased as 29-year-old Norman Ndlovu. The suspect, Getrude Mpofu (21), has since been taken into custody facing murder charges.
According to police, the fatal confrontation occurred on October 12 around 8 a.m. at the couple's home. "The now deceased Ndlovu, who was the accused person's boyfriend, had a misunderstanding with her in the presence of Getrude Mpofu's younger sister," said Assistant Inspector Ndlovu.
The younger sister reportedly left the two still arguing. A short while later, at about 8:35 a.m., she phoned a neighbour - a 23-year-old man - asking him to check on the pair after sensing trouble.
"The neighbour went and found Ndlovu lying lifeless before he made a police report," said Ndlovu.
When police arrived at the scene, they found the deceased with a deep cut on the chest, along with scars on the neck and other parts of the body.
Mpofu was arrested soon after. During questioning, she claimed that she had struck her boyfriend only once on the head with a brick during the altercation.
Assistant Inspector Ndlovu urged members of the public to seek peaceful ways of resolving disputes. "We encourage members of the public to desist from violence as it leads to unnecessary loss of life, and find amicable ways of solving their differences," she said.
