A Harare housemaid appeared in court after allegedly stealing US$500 from her employer and hiding the money beneath a rock in a nearby maize field.

Rejoice Chikwadze (29) appeared before Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo facing theft charges. She pleaded guilty and is awaiting sentencing.

The complainant, Victor Tibugare, is an administrator employed by a funeral services company.

Prosecutor Takudzwa Jambawu told the court that on May 7, Chikwadze allegedly took advantage of her employer's absence to search through a bag before stealing US$500.

The court heard that she then concealed the cash away from the house.

On May 9, Tibugare discovered the money was missing and reported the matter to Zimbabwe Republic Police Highlands.

Detectives from CID Highlands investigated the case and later arrested Chikwadze, who allegedly admitted to the offence during questioning.

She reportedly led detectives to a maize field located several hundred metres from the complainant's residence, where the money had been hidden inside a small plastic bag beneath a rock.

Police recovered the full amount.
