Mnangagwa honours Sikhonjwa with a state-assisted funeral

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has conferred a state-assisted funeral on the late media personality Babongile Sikhonjwa, who passed away in Bulawayo on Sunday. His death has left the media and arts community in shock.
The government will provide US$10,000 to assist the Sikhonjwa family with funeral arrangements. ZANU-PF Secretary General Jacob Mudenda confirmed the development, noting that Sikhonjwa will be laid to rest at Mlozweni Village in Gwanda under Chief Mzimuni.
"His Excellency, the President and First Secretary of ZANU-PF, Dr. E.D. Mnangagwa, has conferred a State Assisted Funeral to the late Babonjiwe Sikhonjwa, who passed on 21st September 2025 and will be buried at Mlozweni Village, Chief Mzimuni, Gwanda. His family can be contacted through our Bulawayo Provincial office. I shall be most grateful if you would make the usual arrangements for his burial and payment of benefits to his family. She is from Bulawayo Province," Mudenda said.
Widely celebrated as the "Ndebele Rockstar," Sikhonjwa was admired not only for his broadcasting talent but also for his role as a cultural ambassador who promoted arts and identity.
A commemoration service is scheduled for Friday at the Bulawayo Amphitheatre, with his burial set for Saturday in Gwanda.
